PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) – The Limestone Chamber of Commerce held their annual Octoberfest this weekend. With blokart rides and racing, pickleball, and a chili cook off folks travelled out to Loring Airforce Base to join in on the fun despite the high winds.
Jo-Ellen Kelley, Vice President of the Limestone Chamber of Commerce said, “We’re having an Oktoberfest. Featuring the 2024 blokart East Coast champions. They’re going to be doing some racing out here today and they’re also giving free blokart rides. We have free pickleball, we have some pickleball lessons for free. We have vendors out here with lots of food. We have a chili cook-off. Even though it’s windy and it seems a little cloudy, it is October and we’re all here. We lost our signage. Yeah, we put it up and the wind tore it down. So, it was a little harder to find the area than it was. We knew we would be windy, but again, this is Aroostook County, it’s October, and we normally have wind.
Blerina Berberi, a blokart racer said, “This venue is amazing. It’s huge. It’s in great condition. I think it’s amazing and has great potential. We love going in different spots and exploring the wind and how it works in different locations. We look forward to being back. We have a bit of very high winds, so the racing for today has been postponed but we’ve had great winds for the last 2 days. We’ve done over 10 races. We do have different sizes of sails. So, we can adjust based on the weight of the person, the sail, in order to make safe blokarting sessions. We also have a harness. So, for people who have different abilities and are on a wheelchair.”
During the event blokart riders eased a few locals concerns stating that despite most people’s belief, a blokart flying away in the high winds is simply not possible.
